
Offender profiling is a set of techniques and tools that uses psychological theory and methods to improve criminal investigations. This fall, John Jay will hold a conference to update professionals on the latest in this groundbreaking research in the area of offender profiling and crime scene analysis.
John Jay College of Criminal Justice has a long-standing history of providing training to the NYPD, FDNY, and many other local, federal and international agencies, and is a leading center for research on offender profiling in the U.S.
Leading profiling and crime analysis researchers and law enforcement personnel will discuss up-to-date practices, training and research findings and how they can be implemented in practice for greater investigation success.
John Jay College Conference attendees will have the opportunity to register for further in-depth training courses at John Jay that expand upon the topics covered at the conference.

Judith Kornberg, PhD, Dean of Continuing & Professional Studies, John Jay College Dean Judith Kornberg earned her doctoral degree in political science from the University of Connecticut and master's degree in history from Northwestern University. She is the head of John Jay’s Continuing and Professional Education program, including the training of NYPD. James Levine, PhD, Dean of Research, John Jay College of Criminal Justice Dean James P. Levine currently is Dean of Research and Professor of Government at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. From 1993 to 1999, he served as Executive Officer of the Doctoral Program in Criminal Justice of the City University of New York located at John Jay College. From 1997 to 2007 he was Dean of Graduate Studies at John Jay College. Dean Levine, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, received a Ph.D. in political science from Northwestern University. Prior to coming to John Jay, he served on the faculties of Michigan State University, the University of Oregon, and Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Dean Levine has written four books, has edited another, and has published numerous articles in academic journals. Mary Ellen O'Toole, PhD, National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, FBI Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) MARY ELLEN O'TOOLE is a member of the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) of the Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG) located at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The BAU, established in the mid l970s and formerly known as the FBI’s Behavioral Science and Profiling Unit, is designed to study violent crimes and the people who commit these crimes. As one of the most senior member’s of the BAU, SSA O'Toole specializes in the careful and detailed analyses of criminals and their crime scene behavior. SSA O’Toole has provided assistance on a wide range of violent crimes including serial and single homicides, sexual assaults, criminal paraphilic behavior, extortions, kidnappings, product tampering, robberies, assaults, threat assessments, arsons and bombings, equivocal deaths, and crimes involving the threat of weapons of mass destruction. SSA O'Toole works closely with law enforcement agencies throughout the world providing behavioral assessments of unknown offenders, investigative suggestions, interview strategies and suggestions for case prosecution. SSA O’Toole currently specializes in serial killers and psychopathy. SSA O'Toole has taught law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors, psychologists, psychiatrists, crime analysts, victim-witness specialists and others from all over the world in different areas of crime scene analysis, violent crime scene assessment, criminal behavior and abnormal psychology, interview and interrogation and interacting with the media in high profile cases- behavioral implications. SSA O’Toole has authored works that include publications in two international books on Psychopathy, and peer reviewed journal articles appearing in Journal of Forensic Science and Corrections Magazine. SSA O’Toole is the primary researcher and author of The School Shooter a Threat Assessment Perspective, published in 2000 and In Search of a Kidnapper – Through the Eyes of a Child, a synopsis of best practices of high profile child abduction investigations in California, published in 1996. C. Gabrielle Salfati, PhD, John Jay College of Criminal Justice Dr C. Gabrielle Salfati is an international expert in offender profiling and homicide. She has presented and published widely both nationally and internationally on homicide and linking serial homicide. She is currently heading a national research project with leading Federal Agencies, looking at systematizing the application of psychology to crime scene investigations. She also heads research programs with many international law enforcement agencies on homicide investigation, offender profiling, and crime scene analysis, and is the Director of the Profiling and Crime Scene Analysis program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Dr Salfati was the previous Director of the masters program in Forensic Behavioral Science and Deputy Director of the masters program in Investigative Psychology at the University of Liverpool in the UK. She has trained law enforcement internationally on profiling and crime scene investigation, as well as advanced decision making to senior criminal justice professionals. Reisenbach Foundation Larry Schatz joined Corinthian in 2001 and since that time he has been responsible for generating and managing over $150 million in media billings for a wide range of clients including Union Pacific; Back-To-Basics Home Products; ACH Foods; Warner Chilcott; Takeda Pharmacueticals; BIC; Mannington Floors; Plantronics; Experian; and Goody’s Family Clothing Stores. He spent his first six years at the CBS flagship television station in business affairs and went on to distribute programming at All American Television as Vice President, Station Sales. He later founded the Randolph Media Group, a sales, distribution and marketing company, and provided his services to a range of clients including: New Line, Warner Bros., Reuters, NBC, WTN, Showtime, Porter/Novelli and All American Television. Additionally, Larry Schatz is a member of the Ad Club and is Vice Chairman and Founding President of the John A. Reisenbach Foundation. Louis B. Schlesinger, PhD, John Jay College of Criminal Justice Dr Louis B. Schlesinger is co-principal investigator in a joint research project with the FBI Behavioral Science Unit studying sexual and serial murder, rape, bias homicide, suicide-by-cop, and other extraordinary crimes. He has had extensive clinical experience, testifying in numerous trials, and has published many articles, chapters, and ten books on the topics of homicide, sexual homicide, and criminal psychopathology. |
