Math 404 Guidelines - Fall 2001

Math 404: Internship in Management Information Systems

There are two possible tracks for this internship:

  1. To complete the internship on campus by completing a term project under my direction.
  2. To complete the internship off campus. This depends on the availability of appropriate sites.

In either case there will be periodic meetings to discuss your progress.

We will meet again on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at which time you will be asked to declare your choice of option. Also, at that meeting future meeting dates will be scheduled and the term project will be presented and discussed.

I) The on campus project:

At the periodic meetings the progress of the term project will be discussed and direction for future work will be given. Attendence at these meetings is required. At the end of the term each student will submit a printout of her/his program and the program on disk. Each student will be asked to run her/his program and its efficacy discussed. Suggestions may be given to improve the program which the student should incorporate into his/her program. A final run of the programs will take place during finals week.

A short essay relating the students experience and reaction to the term project will be required. This should include difficulties encountered and overcome, and satisfaction derived.

II) Off campus internship:

1. It is likely that you will attend the intern site for one day a week, each day consisting of seven hours during the 14 weeks for a total of 96 hours.

2. In addition to your work as an intern we will be meeting as as a conference group on the days and times to be agreed on.

Any changes in the dates and/or times of the group meetings will be communicated to the group.

Attendance is mandatory and absences will be reflected in the student's grade. Individual conferences will not be substituted for the group experience. Students in placement on the scheduled meetings are required to resolve any conflicts with the field supervisor. The field supervisor should be advised of this schedule as early as possible, so as to avoid any disruption of agency services. The faculty advisor should be consulted if a conflict exists which cannot be resolved with the field supervisor.

3. A fifteen minute presentation will be delivered at the group meetings by the participants related specifically to the intern's placement, learning experience, and evaluation of the placement. This will be followed by a general discussion.

4. A log must be kept for each day at the intern site. Logs are to be submitted to the faculty advisor within one week of the day to which the log refers.

5. An internship contract, duly signed by the student and agency representative must be submitted to the faculty advisor by August 29, 2001. It is the responsibility of the student to submit a completed contract. If the student is unable to accomplish this for reasons beyond his/her control, timely notice must be given to the faculty advisor.

6. A term paper specifically relating to the field placement must be submitted no later than Dedember 10, 2001. Papers received after that date will automatically receive a late grade. No exceptions will be allowed regardless of the cause of the delay.

7. Conferences with individual students may be requested by the faculty advisor or by the student. These individual conferences are not intended to serve as an alternative to group meetings, but to meet individual needs and concerns.

8. In emergecy situations the student is advised to seek out the faculty advisor without delay. Should the faculty advisor be unavailable the student should seek assistance at the internship office.

9. The faculty advisor will award your final grade in this course. Your final grade is based on the totality of your work in the field and in the classroom. Fifty percent of your grade will be based on your field work and fifty percent will be based on your academic component. Your field work component is derived from your supervisor's evaluation and the faculty advisor's conversation with your supervisor. The academic component is based on your logs, your contribution to the group discussion, and your term paper. Your term paper is a very important part of the academic component. Students are expected to attend every group meeting on time. Deficiency in class attendance and promptness will be penalized.

Incomplete grades may be assigned for two reasons.

  1. In the absence of your supervisor's written evaluation of your performance and/or his/her written confirmation of the completion of your 96 hours of service. If this happens, the student will receive an incomplete, but the student's grade will not be penalized when these forms are received assuming that the student has completed his/her academic requirements.
  2. An incomplete grade may also be assigned if the student fails to complete course requirements on time. In this case, the student will be penalized in the final grade when all his/her material is received.

This note is to provide the student with a full and open statement of the student's responsibilities in the internship program. These matters will be elaborated on internship day and throughout the semester as required.

Finally, the student is cautioned that although the internship office is highly selective in arranging field placements, these are not all of equal quality. We are, therefore, to a large extent dependent upon your feedback. If the placement is one of high risk, or your services are substantially misused, or present serious problems of any nature, please bring that information back to the faculty advisor or the internship office as soon as possible for possible remedy.

To all students:

  1. Modifications to any of the above details may be made and will be transmitted to the students.
  2. Each student will receive an e-mail account and directions for using e-mail. I will use e-mail as one way of communicating with this class.

I hope that your experience as an intern will be a positive one.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
