At $10 a Fan, That's $17 Million (Jan. 22, 2000)

To the Editor:
In "At $10 a Fan, That's $17 Million" (Op-Ed, Jan. 22), Steven E.
Landsburg compares Derek Jeter's
potential salary to a kindergarten
teacher's.
He assumes the value of
the service each provides is equal
and that the salary difference is
based on the number of people each
reaches.
But differences in value
systems are the basis for the outrage
about huge salaries for sports figures.
Also, I am troubled by the sports
role model not because there are so
few slots available, but because children are taught that your talents are
valuable only if you are paid an
enormous salary.
What does that say to children
about the value of teachers?
