Listening Panel Evaluation Criteria

PowerPoint Presentation

Organization

  • Did the speaker use a thesis to organize her speech?
  • Could you recognize the main points of the speech?
  • Did the speaker use appropriate transitions to move clearly from one idea to the next?
  • Were ideas emphasized (good) or too repetitive (bad)

 

Supporting ideas

  • Did the speaker use specific ideas to support his main points?
  • Did the speaker adequately explain the visuals in the PowerPoint slideshow?

 

PowerPoint Design

  • Was the layout of the slides attractive?  Why?
  • Was the information presented clearly?
  • Did the speaker move through the slides smoothly?
  • Did the information in the slides match what the speaker was talking about?

 

Delivery

  • Generally correct grammar?
  • Loud enough? Slow enough?
  • Clearly articulated? – No mumbling
  • How well did the speaker handle the slideshow part of the speech?  Did she seem rehearsed?

 

General

  • Was the audience interested?
  • Did audience seem to understand the speech?
  • Does the speaker seem prepared, in general?
  • Does the speaker seem confident?
  • How well did the speaker end the speech?  Did she use “that’s it”?
  • Was the speaker prepared?

V.            GROUP WORK assignment – Critique a student speech – 25 minutes

A.            For this presentation you will be working in groups of four.

B.            The object is to critique a video student speech. The speech will be in a video format and can be accessed via your online textbook or the links provided.

C.             After showing the class a part of the speech--no more than two minutes--each member will choose from the list below:

1.             Summary of the speech - 45 seconds

2.             Analysis of the information used in the speech. Consider the content. Where did the ideas come from? - 45 seconds

3.             Analysis of the organzation. How was the content organized? Why was this content delivered in this order? - 45 seconds

4.             Analysis of the delivery of the speech. Include in this the appropriateness of the language used, clothing, and gestures. - 45 seconds

III.            Group Project – Summarizing, Paraphrasing and Quoting with a CITATION:

A.          What is the correct way to let your audience know where you got your information.

B.           Look at a New York Times article. How would this be cited in a speech?

C.            Each group examines a paragraph from an editorial - paraphrase and summarize and cite it.
