The Day I was Born Speech

Instructions:

You are to orally inform the class, using outlined ideas on 8" X 5" cards, what happened on the day after you were born. This will be accomplished by accessing the New York Times newspaper from the day after your birthday. This can be done at the college's library. Ask the librarians for help if you don't know how to access archived NYT articles. [Hint: You can click on the above title to access today's newspaper. But you must go to the library to find the newspaper from the day after you were born.]

Length of speech: at least 2 minutes

You are then to use the following outlining pattern to research and organize and rehearse your speech:

First card: This card will have all the facts you need concerning what events you think were the most interesting ones listed on the front page or anywhere else in the paper. You are to choose three or four of these items and briefly summarize what happened. Use the following outlining pattern for your card--

  • First article -- summarize
  • Second article -- summarize
  • etc..

Second card: This card will inform the class about one event that you will speak about in more detail. You will summarize this event more fully than the previous ones. You will then explain why you, personally, find this occurrance so interesting. Does the event remind you of something that happened to you? // Do the issues interest you? If so, why? // Does this event relate to something that is happening today?

Oral Interpretation Speech

Instructions:

In this speech you will be expected to BOTH read aloud a [selection from a] poem or prose selection and to analyze its meaning based on an original interpretive question about your selection. The selection to be read must be copied onto 8X5 speaking cards. The interpretive speech must be outlined and cover two or three main points that support an answer to an interpretive question you ask.

Your speaker's outline will follow an organization which will be something like the following. After you ask the question, you will answer it generally and then produce two or three reasons why you believe your statement to be true.

A Favorite Web Site Speech

Instructions:

You are to orally inform the class of a www. web site that you feel would be useful to you fellow students in preparing for the "What Makes a Great Speech" presentation

Length of speech: 3 to 4 minutes

You are then to use the following outlining pattern to research and organize and rehearse your speech:

First card: This card will have all the facts about the site. It is informative, both generally as to the goals of the site and how it accomplishes those goals. Use the following outlining pattern for your card--

  1. General goal of the site
  2. Particular information that can be found
  3. Use enlarged visuals from the site

Second card: This card will be interpretive in nature in which you will explain to the class why you think this site could be useful to them. Focus on you audience's needs in accomplishing the goals of the Great Speeches Presentation.
