Learning new skills on the fly If you're confronted with a challenge that requires you to learn something new about an application that you already use, or to quickly learn how to use a new software application, MySkillSource can help.

Once you've logged into your account at the MySkillSource website:

  • Click in the Search box at the left of the window.
  • Enter the skill that you'd like to learn, and click on the Search button.

  • Click on the name of the course that matches your needs.
  • If the course you selected is self-paced, begin learning by clicking on the module containing the skill that you want to learn.  If you want, you can complete the rest of the course later.
  • If the course is instructor-led, complete the sections of the course that cover the skills that you wish to learn.
Identifying and addressing skill gaps MySkillSource's course assessments can also help you identify gaps in your skills.  To take an assessment and find out which skills might help you in your work:
  • Click on the Course Catalog button near the top of your browser window.
  • At the left side of the window, click on Courses with Assessment.
  • Click on the title of a course containing an assessment, and click on Take Assessment from the course's home page.
  • Once you complete the assessment, MySkillSource will respond with a list of course modules that will expand and enhance your skills.
  • Complete these modules at your own pace.
Getting the most out of online learning Online learning, for many people, represents a substantial departure from traditional instructor-led learning.  Here are some tips to help you have a good first experience with online learning.
  • Spend time.  Web-based learning can be convenient, easily accessible, and effective.  However, you'll still need to spend time to learn new skills and gain new knowledge.  Plan enough time for reading course materials, working on practice exercises, or interacting with other learners.  Choose regular times each day for learning, and make sure that they are times when you'll be fresh and engaged.
  • Minimize distractions.  You may find that callers on the phone, incoming email, and questions from co-workers make it difficult to learn.  Choose a place and time to learn so that you'll have a minimal number of distractions and interruptions.
  • Set goals.  Before you begin, spend a few minutes considering what skills and knowledge you'd like to derive from your online learning experience.  As you proceed through an online learning course, occasionally evaluate your progress.  Setting clear goals (and occasionally thinking about whether you're meeting them) will help you evaluate your approach to online learning and make changes as necessary.
