The Department of Speech and Theatre at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice offers several elective courses as well as one of the college's core courses: Effective Speaking, SPE 113.

Additionally, the Department also hosts a Debate Club, presents theatrical productions, and sponsors the John Jay Theatrical Players, a student club that produces plays, holds staged readings, and runs theatre trips for students.

Each spring the Department also holds a speech contest for students, with prizes being awarded for exceptional performances in Oral Interpretation, Informative Speaking, and Persuasive Speaking.
