Speech Course Electives

 

SPE 201: Argumentation Helps students develop skills in academic and audience debates. Lectures and exercises will focus on techniques of oral argument, impromptu debates, "value" versus "policy" debates, and tournament debates. Students will learn to "build a case" through written and oral exercises. Also covered: the role of research in lending impact and credibility to argument, performance, and judging techniques. Discussion of courtroom argument will culminate in a mock trial. Excellent preparation for moot court and law school in general. Prereqs: SPE 113 and ENG 102. 3 Credits.
SPE 203: Oral Interpretation of Literature Develops skills in reading and performance of poetry, prose, dramatic, and other texts. Focus on vocal technique, gesture, textual analysis, and scoring the text. Prereq: SPE 113. 3 Credits.
SPE 213: Mass Media & the Administration of Justice Examines the role of the media -- TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines -- in the administration of justice. Topics may include the influence of the media on judges and juries; the dangers of "trials by newspaper" and of TV in the courtroom; suggested guidelines for the media; and the psychological basis of audience response. Cross-listed with LAW 213. Prereqs: SPE 113 and ENG 102. 3 Credits.
SPE 218: Managerial Communication Provides students with the skills to communicate in a professional environment. Subjects such as interviewing, decision-making, communication, bargaining, negotiation, crisis communication, media encounters, and advanced presentational speaking skills will be covered through discussion and practice. Prereqs: SPE 1113 and ENG 102. 3 Credits.
SPE 240: Contemporary Media Forms Analysis of video, film, audio, print, digital, and cyber media as they are used in contemporary communications and impact our everyday lives. Includes guest speakers, screenings, and field trips. Prereqs: SPE 113 and ENG 101. 3 Credits.
SPE 285: Courtroom Communication Develops effective performance in oral communication to enhance courtroom advocacy and writing skills through trial simulation and written analysis. Covers jury selection, strategies and techniques in courtroom speech, direct and cross-examination, issue analysis, and language. Prereq: SPE 113 or permission of Chair. 3 Credits.
