The Addiction Studies Curriculum for Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling (CASAC) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice

 

The following courses fulfill the educational requirements for the CASAC: 

It is recommended that students take the courses in the listed order.

 

1. PSY/SOC/ANT 110.  Drug and Alcohol Use and Abuse in America

Content for CASAC:  45 hours: Knowledge of alcohol and substance abuse.

Basic knowledge:  physical and pharmacological effects.

Overview/diversity of alcohol and substance abuse treatment approaches.

Knowledge of the social, political, economic and cultural context which

are factors in the course of addictive illness.  Offered every semester.

 

2. PSY 266. Psychology of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.

Content for CASAC:  45 hours: Knowledge of alcohol and substance abuse.

Basic knowledge: Knowledge of models and theories of addiction.

Overview/diversity of alcohol and substance abuse treatment approaches.

Knowledge of 12 Step and self-help approaches. Knowledge of diagnosis of

alcohol and substance use disorders.  (Prerequisites ENG 101 and PSY 101)  Offered every semester.

 

3. SOC 161. Chemical Dependency and the Dysfunctional Family

Content for CASAC:  45 hours: Alcoholism and substance abuse counseling.

Knowledge of effects of chemical dependency on family and significant

others and the importance of family support in recovery.  Knowledge of

basic family treatment approaches. Offered every semester.

 

 

4. PSY 268. Therapeutic Interventions in Chemical Dependency

Content for CASAC: 45 hours: Alcoholism and substance abuse counseling.

Individual counseling and relapse prevention techniques.  Knowledge of

the philosophies, practices, policies and outcomes of accepted models of

treatment.  (Prerequisites ENG 101 and PSY 101)  Offered every semester.

 

 

5. PSY 255. Group Dynamics in Chemical Dependency Counseling.

Content for CASAC:  45 hours:  Alcoholism and substance abuse

counseling. Ability to incorporate the special needs of diverse racial

and ethnic cultures and special populations in treatment. (Prerequisite

PSY 266 or PSY/SOC/ANT 110 or PSY242; in addition Eng 101).  Offered every semester.

 

6. PSY/CSL 331. Assessment and Clinical Evaluation in Chemical Dependency

Counseling

Content for CASAC:  35 hours: Assessment, clinical evaluation, treatment

planning, case management and patient, family and community education.

Case management and referral.  Introduction: treatment planning,

clinical record keeping, and discharge planning.

10 Hours: Alcoholism and substance abuse counseling.

(Prerequisite PSY266 and PSY 268; In addition ENG 102).  Offered every semester.

 

7.  PSY/CSL 350. Advanced Topics in Chemical Dependency Counseling.

Content for CASAC:  35 hours:  Assessment, clinical evaluation,

treatment planning,  case management and patient, family and community

education. Assessment and evaluation.  Part II: treatment planning,

Clinical record keeping, and discharge planning.

10 hours: Alcoholism and substance abuse counseling.  (Prerequisite PSY/CSL331. In addition ENG 102).  Offered every semester.

 

8. PSY 480.  Ethical and Professional Issues in Chemical Dependency

Counseling.

Content for CASAC:  45 hours:  Professional and ethical responsibility

and documentation. Advanced counseling issues:  developing and

maintaining professional relationships.  Use of diagnostic criteria to

develop treatment options and placement criteria.  (Prerequisites:

PSY/CSL350. In addition ENG 102.) Offered every semester.

 

The training requirements for the CASAC can be met by taking the following courses:

 

9. PSY 378. Fieldwork in Forensic Psychology

Completion of this course fulfills 150 hours of the 300 hour training

component for the CASAC in conjunction with placement at a licensed

alcoholism or substance abuse program, providing the necessary

experience and supervision and an increase in hours spent in the

Internship to total 150 hours.  (Prerequisites:  PSY 242 and ENG 102.)

 

 

10 . PSY 379. Fieldwork in Forensic Psychology

Completion of this course fulfills 150 hours of the 300 hour training

component for the CASAC in conjunction with placement at a licensed

alcoholism or substance abuse program, providing the necessary

experience and supervision and an increase in hours spent in the

Internship to total 150 hours.  (Prerequisites:  PSY378).

 

It is recommended that students take SOC161, PSY255, PSY 268, and PSY331 before taking the internship courses.
