Herbert R. Hartel, Jr. received his doctorate in modern and American art from the Ph.D. Program in Art History at the CUNY Graduate and his M.A. in Art History and B.A. in Studio Art and Art History from Queens College, CUNY. 

 

He is a former curatorial / research intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  He has taught the introductory / survey course in art history, modern art, contemporary art, 19th-century art, American art and special topics courses at John Jay College, York College, Parsons School of Design, Baruch College, Fordham University, Pratt Institute, and Brooklyn College

 

His articles have been published in SOURCE: NOTES ON THE HISTORY OF ART, PART: THE ONLINE JOURNAL OF ART HISTORY, THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS, CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, and THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE.  He frequently contributes book reviews to THE ART BOOK.  He is the coordinator for Visual Arts in the West for the Southwest / Texas Popular Culture and American Culture Associations.
