BODY:
To the Editor:
In this 30th anniversary of Congressional passage of Title IX, the civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, it is ironic and discouraging that the Bush administration has chosen to use its regulatory power to encourage sex discrimination by promoting single-sex education (news article, May 9).
Instead, schools need federal support to make the kind of changes envisioned by Title IX and by the Women's Educational Equity Act of 1974 to transform their classrooms and playing fields to ensure that boys and girls grow up and learn as equals.
If it is true that girls must be segregated from boys to build their self-confidence and learn math and science, that should tell us that something is deeply wrong with our classrooms, our curriculums and our teaching methods rather than with girls and boys.
