  1. Go to the The New York Times online opinion page and find an issue of interest. Remember you need to register to use the site, but it is free.
  2. Go to Lexis-Nexis at the John Jay College Library website. You can access all New York Times articles from there. Ask any reference librarian (second floor of the library in the "T" building) for assistance.

CRITICAL INQUIRY INSTRUCTIONS

Read selected articles several times, carrying out the various Critical Inquiry method steps--

  1. Print out the article.
  2. Read through the article the first time circling unknown words and phrases
  3. Read through a second time underlining and making notes in the columns [summaries, comments and questions]
  4. If assigned by your instructor, complete an analysis of the chosen article:
  • write out words and phrases that are confusing. Guess meanings based on how the word is used in context and the dictionary.
  • write out at least five comprehensive questions. Note where the answers are located.
  • choose the most important key words; try to define a few.
  • Write out at least three searching/interpretive and/or searching questions.
  • Write an answer to one of the searching/interpretive questions. It should be at least half a written page (one third of a typed page).
