ACT Topics

The Board of Education has received two proposals to develop a program to help recent immigrant students learn English. One proposal is to hire teachers for a bilingual education program. In this program, students would take core courses, such as history, math and science in their native languages. The other proposal is to create an English immersion program in which core courses would be taught entirely in English. Write a letter to the Board of Education curriculum committee in which you argue for a bilingual education program or for an English immersion program. Explain how your choice will best help recent immigrant students learn English.
Begin your letter, "Dear Curriculum Committee:"

A major supermarket chain is planning to build a huge new supermarket in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood that doesn't have one already. Not only will the new supermarket create more than one hundred jobs, it will also offer residents more variety and lower prices than the bodegas can offer. The new store is running into some strong opposition from people who say that the proposed supermarket will put the family-owned bodegas out of business. The Community Planning Board will soon meet to decide whether or not to issue a permit to the supermarket chain to begin building. Write a letter to the Board in which you argue in favor of building a large supermarket or of keeping bodegas in business. Explain how your choice will benefit the Hispanic neighborhood.
