David Berkowitz, also known as the Son of Sam, started killing randomly in July 1976. His first victims were Donna Lauria and Jady Valentin. Donna was shot in the neck. Donna died instantly. Jady survived the shooting, but she was seriously injured. A few months later, Berkowitz struck again, and panic gripped the residents of New York City. All of the shootings took place in New York. Despite the many leads and anonymous phone calls received by the police, the killer remained at large. People were afraid to stay out at night. The Son of Sam chose to shoot his victims at night. The killing spree lasted for a year and engaged hundreds of police and detectives in a furious manhunt. Over this period, six individuals were killed and seven were wounded. Finally, the Son of Sam was caught on August 10, 1977. After his arrest, he showed no emotion as he admitted to the murders. In fact, he was very cooperative with the investigators. Berkwoitz's memory was very sharp. He described each shooting in detail. In the end, he was sentenced to 365 years in prison without parole.
