Introduction to Exercise 2 |
|
 |
  |
| • |
A fragment is an incomplete sentence because either:
- it is a dependent clause
- it lacks a subject
- it lacks a verb or part of the verb phrase
|
| • |
To fix a fragment, either attach the dependent clause
to a complete sentence or add the missing element(s)—subject, verb, or part of
the verb phrase.
- Example (lacking a subject): During an arraignment, will plead guilty
or not guilty.
Corrected version: During an arraignment, the accused
will plead guilty or not guilty.
- Example (lacking part of the verb phrase): He rewarded by the committee
for his excellent performance.
Corrected version: He was rewarded by the committee
for his excellent performance.
- Example (a dependent clause): Because she felt law enforcement was such
an important field.
Corrected version: Because she felt law enforcement was such an important field,
she chose to become a police officer.
