Living in New York

If you already live in the New York metro region then you are probably set for some place to live and can skip this page.

But if are from outside New York you will be joining the legions of people who come to New York to work or study and enjoy the excitement and opportunities. Indeed, numerous students come to John Jay from across the U.S. and abroad to attend graduate school. The forensic computing program currently has students who came both from other states and abroad. The rub is that consistent with traditions of The City University of New York, John Jay does not provide student housing.

So you have to figure out where to live on your own. The toughest challenge is if you want to be in Manhattan. A common method is to work with a broker, they typically charge a month's rent as a fee, but plenty of people find something on their own. With the shifts in the economy there may even be unexpected opportunities. But most students find something outside of Manhattan as the New York metropolitan region is vast and John Jay graduate students live hither and yon and commute to Manhattan. Just allow enough time to find something suitable and be prepared for "sticker shock" on market rate apartments if you are from another part of the country. Understand that there are still thousands of rent controlled and rent stabilized apartments in the city with modest rents. And they do come on the market. You just have to find one. Not easy but not impossible.
