Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity - D4CS

(formerly Forensic Computing - FCM)

News and Events

Welcome to the JJay/D4CS (aka FCM) Web Site. Here both current and prospective students can find information about our Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity Programs.

NSF IGERT Full Fellowship Available for Fall 2012 {NEW!}

A fellowship that covers full tuition and an annual tax-free stipend of up to $30,000 for four semesters is available for an entering computer science graduate for Fall 2012. The fellowship will be awarded to a student who will go on to a doctoral program upon completion of the D4CS degree program. Information about the fellowship can be found here.

FCM program renamed to D4CS

We have begun to use the new name of the program: Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity Program or D4CS. This name better captures the range of the program's offerings than the original moniker of 'forensic computing'. Given the college's adminstration has begun to refer to us with the new name, it seemed time to make the switch on this page. For now, however, the degree we offer continues to be the Master of Science in Forensic Computing.

D4CS student onstage again!

Our own Joy Song is appearing in a play called OBJects at the Brick Theater in Williamsburg. Performances are:

    • Friday Feb 10 @ 8:30pm
    • Saturday Feb 11 @ 3pm

Spring 2012 Internships

Paid Corporate Internships. Several private firms have offered to explore internships with FCM students. These positions are normally paid internships. They can sometimes be used for capstone fieldwork; however, you are also free to obtain them on your own before you pass the QUE. If you are interested, contact Professor Lovely.

Capstone Fieldwork. If you are due for your capstone fieldwork contact Professor Lovely to discuss possible arrangements for Spring 2012 internships. Students must have passed the qualifying examination to be eligible to register for FCM 780, Capstone Fieldwork. Registration is handled as an independent study and must be completed by the end of the second week of classes.

College Council Approves CAD4SCI Program

We are pleased to announce the College Council has approved our proposal for an advanced certificate program that will award a Certificate in Applied Digital Forensic Science (CAD4SCI). This certificate program will be integrated into the degree program of study and entail four courses plus a certification exam. It will also be available to qualified non-degree students. It has to approved by the state higher education office which we anticipate by Spring 2012.

College Council Approves D4CS Changes

The College Council has approved proposed changes in the Forensic Computing degree program. The changes are likely to take effect by Fall 2012, upon approval by CUNY and then the state of New York. A comparison of the changes in the existing versus the proposed program of study is here. Below are the highlights of changes approved:

    • New name: Master of Science in Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity
    • New flexibility with fewer required courses - reduced to five
    • New Cooperative Education Option
    • New optional Applied Digital Forensic Science Certification Exam replaces required qualifying exam
    • New 33 credit degree option for thesis students or for students who earn faculty certification on Applied Digital Forensic Science Certification Exam
    • New capstone option: Applied Research Project
