Because there is so much to talk about in the recent period regarding the Amsterdam Houses and, after 1974, the Amsterdam Addition, we decided to let our oral interviews with the residents tell us which issues to research.
Under the broad category of New Challenges, we will look at the history of the issue of evictions from public housing in New York. So many residents spoke of their concern regarding the eviction of undesirable tenants, we thought we should look at the history of evictions in NYCHA.
We will also look at the history of crime in public housing between 1980 and 1995 because residents told us that their most pressing concern after 1980 was safety.
Under the broad category of New Directions, we will look at the expansion of social services in NYCHA and at the Amsterdam Houses in the 1960s.
Also under the category of New Directions, we will look at the birth of the Amsterdam Addition.
