SHORT ANSWER QUESTION ON TEXTBOOK READING

Answer the following questions. As always, put your answers in your own words; do not repeat the language of the textbook's authors. Remember to provide evidence for your points.

1) After the Spanish conquered the Aztec and Incan leaderships, what did the Spanish choose to do with the Incan and Aztec governing administrative structures? Another way to think about this question is, whom did the Spanish choose to administer the territories they seized: natives or Spanish migrants? Why? Think about the lecture from class.

AFRICA'S LOST TRIBE?

DESCENDANTS OF AFRICANS SOLD AS PART OF THE INDIAN OCEAN SLAVE TREADE

Interested in the recent fate of the modern descendants of enslaved Africans sold in the Indian Ocean slave trade? It might surprise you.

See this article from The New York Times about "Africa's Lost Tribe"

2)Well before the arrival of the first European on the West Coast of Africa in the 15th century -- indeed, since at least the eighth century -- there had been an extensive trade in enslaved Africans run by both Arab and African slave traders. To where did these slave traders transport enslaved Africans?

3) Considering the reading as a whole, carefully describe the process by which trade expand and wealth increased in 16th Century Asia. Be precise and provide specifics. Answering this question will require a brief but detailed paragraph that covers both India and China.

USE YOUR OWN WORDS AND ONLY YOUR OWN WORDS.

Hints: (A) Your answer needs to explicitly describe the interconnected chain of events that led to expanded trade and increased wealth in in 16th Century Asia. Example: X caused Y for reason Z, which in turn caused X1 for reason Y1, and so on.

(B) What made buying and selling goods easier in this period?

4) Imagine that you are an advisor to the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Akbar has become intrigued by the new foreigners showing up in Indian ports: Europeans. Moreover, Akbar has learned that Europeans have started to appear in the cities of one of Asia's other great empires: Ming China. Akbar has asked you to write a brief memo (1 - 2 paragraphs) assessing the potential and/or threat these new comers pose to both Empires and -- accordingly -- the proper response to them. Limit your memo to knowledge this advisor would have in 1580; that is, no time travel permitted. Things to consider in your memo: how large is the European presence in Asia and what is its nature? What benefits does the European presence bring? Are the Europeans a serious military threat right now? Be sure you ground your recommendations at least in part on events in Ming China. Be specific!

5) Carefully explain the process by which the policies of Mughal Dynasty contributed to the “commercialization of Empire” between 1450 and 1600? Be sure that your explanation describes what came before the “commercialization of Empire”. Be precise and provide specifics.

Answering this question will require a brief but detailed paragraph. By "explain the process by which" I mean the chart out for me the interconnected chain of events that led to commercialization of Empire -- as Hint (A) above in question 3, I need to see here X caused Y for reason Z, which in turn caused X1 for reason Z1, which caused X2 for reason Z2, and so on.
