Open Note Quizzes & Vocabulary Terms

When a quiz is labeled"Open Note," the quiz will contain one vocabulary term from the reading. While ANY word from the assigned pages of the reading might appear on the quiz, it's pretty straightforward to prepare for such a quiz.

Here's how: when you encounter a word you don't know from the reading, right down its definition in your notes. That way --since it's an open note quiz--you will have all the answers you need in your notes.

Example: On page 10 of the textbook, the following sentence appears:

Although Africa south of the Sahara had been the cradle of human life, its environment and climate impeded human settlements as dense as those in North Africa or Eurasian societies.

The quiz, accordingly might ask the following question:

Define the following underline word: In place, Africa's "
environment and climate impeded human settlements as dense as those in North Africa or Eurasian societies"

HINT: It's easy to think you know the meaning of a word when you might not actually know it; so, if you haven't actually used a word in a sentence, be sure to write down its meaning.
