Historical Text Archive
Links to archives, history departments, www servers, and reviews, this site also provides access to a large number of full-text documents.

Repositories of Primary Sources
A collection of over 4000 links to websites describing holdings of manuscripts, archives, rare books, photographs, and other primary sources.

Archival Data Online Repository
A collection of  data provided by the University of Wisconsin Data and Program Library Service. A number of the groups contain historical data on topics such as the 18th and 19th century slave trade, the Russian Imperial bureaucracy, 1762-1881, and French provincial intendants, 1661-1790.

The Avalon Project
A collection maintained by Yale University School of Law of over 150 historical documents which range from pre-18th century titles through the 20th century. A "major collections" category contains sets of related documents, such as Franco-American Diplomacy, Papers of the Confederate States of America, the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. The site includes a title and author index.

Gender History and Studies
This page constructed by Tennessee Technological University links to a number of online resources in women's history and women's studies in general.

History Departments Around the World
A collection of links to the Web pages of history departments around the world.

H-Net Reviews
A source of book reviews which encompasses all the humanities, with a particular emphasis on history.

International Institute of Social History
The homepage of one of the world's foremost institutions for social history. Features of this site include a catalog of the Institute's archival collections, digital versions of its exhibitions, a list of its new publications, extensive links to labor and business history sites, and ViVa, a current bibliography of articles on women's history.

University of Pennsylvania African Studies Center
This site has links to a large number of African Studies electronic resources, including country-specific pages, internet resources, multimedia archives, and news from the African Studies Association.

 

 

 

 

Asia

Asian Studies
Part of the World-Wide Web Virtual Library, this site is affiliated with the Australian National University. It contains over 600 links to electronic resources in Asian studies.

The Wars for Vietnam: 1945 to 1975
Covers the conflicts in Vietnam from the period of French involvement through the U.S. involvement, up to the fall of Saigon in 1975. Contains a main overview essay and hypertext links to full-text documents, presidential archives, and other related sites. Also includes a list of additional Vietnam-related links and Vietnam Veteran Web sites.

Guide to Japan
An overview of Modern Japan with historical sections. It also contains a guide to travel in the nation of Japan.

Chinese History
From the University of Oregon, this site has an extensive collection of historical materials, links, translation programs, and general history of China from the earlist times to the People's Republic of China.

Korea
This site maintained at University of California, Berkeley, has information on Korean history from pre-918 A.D. to the present.

EuroDocs

This site provides a large number of links to Western European historical documents from the Middle Ages to recent times. Mainly primary sources, the documents may be transcribed, reproduced in facsimile, or translated.

History Data Service
Located at the University of Essex, the History Data Service is Britain's national center for the preservation and supply of historical data held in computer-readable form. Data covering all historical periods is acquired from a wide range of sources, preserved, and made available to researchers via an on-line catalog, which can be accessed through this site.

Victorian Web
Provides in-depth treatment of the economics, religion, philosophy, literature, visual arts, science, and politics of Britain during the 19th century. "Social Context" leads to an extensive "Victorian History Overview" that provides links to Victorian political, social, and economic history sites, as well as sites about the Empire and international relations of the 19th century.

The Witchcraft Bibliography Project
A bibliography of witchcraft in Early Modern Europe and America, mainly of materials published since 1950. In addition, there are links to other witchcraft Web sites.

REESWeb
Located at the University of Pittsburgh, REESWeb is a comprehensive index of electronic resources in Russian and East European Studies. Among its many offerings are national homepages, archives of information, and Web servers in the former Soviet Union.

The Labyrinth
Sponsored by Georgetown University, this site contains full text documents (often in the original language), bibliographies, teaching resources, information about professional organizations, and a wide variety of links.

ORB
In addition to full-text essays and bibliographies, this medieval studies site has a large collection of documents in its resources for teaching section ("The Online Medieval Sourcebook").

The Medieval Review
A collection of full-text book reviews in all areas of Medieval Studies.

The Carolingians: an English-Language Bibliography

 Exploring Ancient World Cultures
The University of Evansville has a complete overview of ancient world cultures: Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Rome, Greece, and Islam are some of the topics expounded upon. An exploration of what culture is, what it means, and how it is transmitted provide a grounding in the discovery of world civilizations.

 

 Alexander the Great
His first ever web site. A fine collection of myths, anecdotes, and historical facts on one of the first great empire builders. Includes an interactive map of his journey across the Near and Middle East.

 

Mesopotamia
A FAQ of Assyria and Babylon discusses the mythology and history of Mesopotamina and two of its most important civilizations.

United States History Sites

American and British History Resources on the Internet
One of the most extensive and well-organized general sites for American and British history. Includes access to a large variety of general and thematic sites, historical documents and electronic texts, bibliographies, archival collections, electronic journals, historical associations, and history listservs. A good place to start when looking for historical sites on the Internet.

American Memory Project: Library of Congress
A collection of primary source documents and archives from the Library of Congress pertaining to American history and culture. Includes African-American pamphlets, Civil War photographs, a collection of women's suffrage documents, etc. Users can search the collections by key word or terms. Consists of printed text, collections of photographs, and some scanned manuscripts. Additional collections will be added.

Documenting the American South
Contains primary sources that document the cultural history of the American South from the Southern point of view. Includes diaries, autobiographies, travel accounts, titles about slavery, and regional literature. Emphasis is on the 19th century.

Furman University Nineteenth Century Documents Project
Offers transcriptions of important primary texts from 19th century American history. Includes a large number of newspaper editorials about important issues of the period.

American Civil War Homepage
An excellent site, large and well-organized. Offers access to letters, diaries, and other documents; graphic images; battle histories; combat rosters; state and local studies; etc. The U.S. Civil War Center also provides links to a wide variety of sites, including books and magazines; unit histories; battlefields, cemeteries, and parks; maps; and Civil War-era newspapers.

Valley of the Shadow: Living the Civil War in Virginia and Pennsylvania

Academic Info: African American History

American Women's History: A Research Guide
Provides extensive citations to print, electronic, and primary source materials related to American women's history. There is a topical subject index, regional sources arranged by state, and the guide to finding primary sources includes links to digital collections.

Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1830-1930

Canada
