Dr. K's Top Ten List

From the home office in North Hall, here are the top ten ways to improve your grade in General Psychology:

10.  Complete all the assignments. (I know that this sounds silly but you would be amazed at the number of people who do not do the research assignment. It is not optional. It is not extra credit but it is an easy way to boost your grade. It also hurts your grade if you do not complete the assignment. With a B- average on the exams, you will get a B in the class if you do the research assignment. If you do not, you will have a C- average in the class. This is an easy way to boost your grade.)

 9.  Print out the lecture outline that is on the web site before coming to class. (Not only will the outline help you organize your notes but also it will help orient you to important concepts in the text. Note that these are lecture OUTLINES, not lecture notes. There is no substitute for coming to class and taking your own notes.)

 8.  Read the assigned chapter before coming to class. (It will help you understand what I am talking about in lecture).

 7.   Come to class. Everyday.

 6.   Come to class on time and stay for the entire period. (If you think that you will not miss anything important during the first 10 minutes of class, you are mistaken. Show up early; show up often).

 5.   Take notes when you are in class. (Do not think that the outlines posted on the web site will be adequate study material. I will say many things in lecture that will not be on the outlines. Those things will be on the exam).

 4.   When you are not in class, get notes from someone reliable. (This may not be your best friend in the class. Find someone who is taking good notes. Ask to borrow them. If you have been taking good notes and can return the favor in the future, you will increase the likelihood of that person saying yes).

 3.   After class, reread the assigned chapter, taking notes on the material. (Make notes to yourself about lingering questions that you have regarding the material. Ask these questions when you next come to class.)

 2.   Study a little bit at a time. Do not cram the night before the exam. It does not work (see the chapter on Memory in your textbook). All that cramming does is make you sleepy during the exam.

And the number one way to improve your grade is:

 1.   Did I mention, come to class?
