Interesting Web Sites to Explore
This site consists of a listing of interesting links that students might
explore.
- HoTMaiL: This is a free e-mail service. It
is especially useful for students in the Graduate Computer Classroom
who do not have their own computers, as they can establish an e-mail
address instantly. It is also useful for people who have one computer
shared by several people. An entire family can have separate e-mail
addresses. Children can access their e-mail from a variety of locations
such as from school or a library or at a friend's hours.
- Infoseek Personal News Center: This
site allows you to establish a personal news feed related to topics in
the news of interest to you.
- Lycos People Finder: This site
allows you to find people including their home addresses. The site can
also generate maps of addresses.
- University of Texas World Lecture Hall: This
site contains links to courses, from universities around the world, offered with Internet support, or actually offered
on the internet. The courses illustrate various techniques for presenting
information. You might also examine the web page on Teaching and Learning
on the Internet on my home page. It contains annotated illustrations of
various techniques and approaches.
- Stepping Stones Internet Learning Page:
This site is a tutorial about the Internet. If you want a basic introduction to the internet,
this is a good place to start.
- Travelocity: This is a
giant travel agent site sponsored by Sabre and American Airlines. I make no
endorsement, but suggest that it illustrates many ways that the Internet
can be used to provide practical information to people without involving
personnel and expense from the organization involved.
- Music Boulevard: This is
a giant CD store. You can listen to clips of music. However, you must
download RealAudio to
actually hear music, and you must have a sound card. (The basic version of RealAudio is free.) This is not the
only music store on the internet.
- TimeCast Radio Links: If you
have RealAudio installed, you can listen to a variety of broadcasts over
the Internet -- like listening to the radio. These are especially
useful if you like a program but do not have the opportunity
to listen to it when it is broadcast.
- The Actionville Virtual Library: This
is a set of links to libraries and reference services which I set up for
my son's school. Some of the links are for children, but most are for
anyone. You might also check out the site in general at The Actionville Home Page, as it illustrates how
the Internet can be used to support education.
- Shareware Sites: The following sites offer free software that you
can download (copy to your computer disk) and install on your computer.
Some of the software is completely free, and some is "shareware", which means that
you can try the software and then decide to pay later if you continue to use it.
- The Association of Inspectors General: This
is the home page for State and Local Inspectors General. We maintain this
site at John Jay College. There is a good collection of reports and studies
by Comptrollers, State Auditors, IGs, and Legislative Staffs. There is
also a good career site with job listings in Inspection and Oversight.
