The Department of Public Management
The Minor in Public Administration

After you graduate from John Jay College, will you be able to apply what have learned to the rough-and-tumble realities of government bureaucracies? Will you be prepared to write grant applications, to master civil service regulations, to supervise employees, to prepare budget projections, to implement your ideas and plans?

Your "major" field of study should satisfy your intellectual interests and fit with your career plans. If you complement your major with a Minor in Public Administration, your college preparation will have a valuable additional dimension -- skills and insights about policy and management in public agencies. If you interview experienced professionals in your field, they will probably tell you of the importance of management concepts and skills to a successful career -- not just to "move up the career ladder", but also to achieve results and "make a difference" in your work.

The Minor in Public Administration is not available to students who major in Public Administration, but is available to all other students. To receive the minor, you must complete 18 credits of Public Administration courses. The following are some suggested courses:

You may also substitute other Public Administration courses, since the requirements for a minor are not as strictly defined as those for a major. Furthermore, since some of these courses are required in several majors, and are concentration options in other majors, you may find that you have almost earned the minor already, and that the additional coursework involved is less than you expected.
