Mangai Natarajan, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the department of Sociology, John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York. She has been conducting comparative research on women policing for more than a decade and has published widely on the topic. She has been trained as a drug researcher under a National Institute of Drug Abuse post-doctoral fellowship and a Scientist Development Award, and has published a number of papers in the areas of drug abuse, drug treatment and drug supply (including drug trafficking and street selling). She has experience of undertaking qualitative and quantitative analysis using both primary and secondary data sources, and has used a number of software programs such as SPSS and FolioViews (a Hypertext program). In addition to her work on women police and drug abuse, she has expertise in the theories and methods of environmental criminology. She has been frequently invited to present her research in this field at a variety of national and international conferences.

Dr. Natarajan has a B.S. degree in Natural Science, an M.A. in Criminology (Psychology) and a Master’s diploma in Indo-Japanese Studies from the University of Madras, India. She was also trained in India as a counselor for juvenile delinquents and women in distress. Subsequently, she took courses in the Ph.D. program in Sociology at Michigan State University and obtained her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice for Rutgers University. Apart from teaching Criminology, she is presently coordinating a major on International Criminal Justice and is teaching a new course on crime mapping for graduate students, which involves ArcView (a GIS program). Her current research interests include cross-cultural research, crime prevention, drug trafficking, and drug abuse and health issues.
