Using
the
Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database:
On-board Insurrections

I. LOOKING FOR VOYAGES ON WHICH THERE WERE SLAVE INSURRECTIONS
If you would like to search for on-board revolts by enslaved Africans, click on the first gray box below "select filter," and roll your cursor down until you the item "outcome of voyage" gets highlighted in blue. Once that occurs, a second box should appear to the right. Roll your cursor over the item "slave revolt on board." Then left click on your mouse.
(see image below)

To the right of the first gray box under "Select Filters," there will now appear the phrase "European vessel cut off from African cost." Press the down arrow button, and roll your cursor over the item "Insurrection" once that item is highlighted in blue, left click on your mouse. Then press button at the bottom of the page in the center with the blue magnifying glass that says "Perform Query." This will instruct the database to display all voyages which match the criteria you have established.

II. LOOKING FOR ONLY SUCCESSFUL SLAVE INSURRECTIONS
First, press the "New" grey button at the top of the screen to clear out your previous search.
If you want to look for all successful slave insurrections on-board a ship (regardless of other aspects of the voyage, say date or port of embarkation for the enslaved Africans on board a particular ship), under "Select Filter," choose "Outcome of Voyage" from the pull-down menu. Once you have placed your cursor over "Outcome of Voyage" (it will get highlighted in blue) a second pull-down menu will appear to the right of the first. The first option from this second menu will be yet another "Outcome of Voyage." Move your cursor over this second outcome of Voyage," and this second "Outcome of Voyage" will get highlighted in blue.
(see image below)

Once this second "Outcome Of Voyage" is highlighted, press the left-click button on your mouse. Doing so will bring up yet another drop down menu to the right, the first option of which will be "Abandoned and/or sold off Africa". Scroll down on this drop-down menu until you see "Captured by slaves ship did not reach the Americas".
(see image below)

III. REFINING YOUR SEARCH BY DATE
If you wanted to refine your search by date, under the second filter, scroll down until "Date" is highlighted. Once that occurs, a second box will appear to the right of the first, roll your cursor over "Departure of Voyage," a third box will appear to the right of the second, select "year of departure." Once this option is highlighted, left click on your mouse.
(see image below)
If you want to search for slave rebellion on board ships BEFORE a certain date, choose the "less than" symbol (looks like this "<" ) from the middle drop-down menu between "Year of Departure" and the blank box. "Less than" here tells the computer to search for a year "before"; likewise, the "greater than" symbol (looks like this ">"") means "after" and the "equals" ("=") symbol means "is," as in "Year of Departure is .")
(see image below)

Once you have selected the "less than" symbol, you can insert whatever year you wish. So, if you are interested in voyages before 1750, make sure the middle pull-down menu to the right of "Year of Departure" is set to "before" ("<") and the date in the grey box to the right is 1750.
