Answer each of the questions below with two to three paragraphs
each. Remember to identify your claim/evidence/warrant
structure. If you use direct quotations
as textual evidence, be sure to keep those quotations to under
eight words. You may wish to experiment with blending direct
and indirect quotations.
1.
Describe the origins, nature, and divisions within the multi-racial
society of Sâo Tomé. Be sure to identify all of
the groups on the island in 1709 and pay attention to economic
control -- and slavery -- in your answer.
2. What can the changing fortunes of the island tell us about
the nature of the slave trade? Don't summarize for us the shifting
position of the island in the Atlantic economy; rather, use
the island as evidence to make a statement that helps us understand
the nature of the slave trade.
