The Guggenheim Museum in NYC has a superb exhibit of Aztec art that closes February 13. If you visit the exhibit before it closes and answer the following questions by Feb. 15th, you may potentially receive up to the equivelant of 2 homework assignements.

1) In a brief paragraph, describe the connection between the Aztec’s relations with their neighbors and the “late postclassical historic process.”

2) In the Aztec worldview described by the exhibit, what is the relationship between human beings and the passage of time. Choose one object from the collection and describe how it embodies this aspect of the Aztec worldview.

3) What was the role of art in Aztec hegemony? (he·gem·o·ny (n): control or dominating influence by one person or group over others, especially by one political group over society or one nation over others)

4) What happened to ball players who guessed the sun’s trajectory inaccurately?

5) We might call the Aztecs were archeologists in their own right; how and why?

6) Choose one object that best embodies the limits Aztec rulers placed on consumption by certain groups

7) Why did the Aztecs purposely not conquer the Mezitlan, Tlaxcala, and others?

8) Why were the Taraslans able to form their own art form in contrast to other groups in what is now Central America?

9) How did the art form described above differ from Aztec art?

10) Write a brief paragaph that summarizes the most important thing you learned from the exhibit.
