PAX
-- A DEFINITION
The textbook wrongly assumes everyone has had the time and
inclination to familiarize themselves with a wide range of Latin
terms and so does not give students a definition for Pax.
So, I will. Pax is Latin for "peace," and
accordingly we speak of Pax Romana (the peace brought about
by the Roman Empire), Pax Britannica (the limited peace brought
about by the British Empire of the 19th century within the its
borders). In thinking about the significance of pax mongolica,
think about what profitable activities are more possible
during peaceful times rather than during war.
