Although you will not have the same luxury
of time that you have when reading and analyzing the long essay, you must
also understand the subject of the short essay and the author’s main
idea. Typically, the subject of the short essay will mirror that of the
long essay; the second author may simply have a different opinion, or may
provide further elaboration on the subject (and suggest an alternate “solution”
or outlook). Don’t overlook any interesting similarities between the
essays--you’ll need them when writing your response.
