Gender Studies Program

John Jay’s Gender Studies Program boasts over fifty professors from seventeen departments at the college whose research and teaching puts gender at the center of inquiry. Gender Studies courses engage students in the study of gender and sexuality as historical, cultural, and biological entities that shape human development, behavior, and the course of justice. John Jay’s Gender Studies Program is first of its kind at CUNY and the only interdisciplinary major and minor degree program at the college to encompass the humanities, the sciences and the social sciences. The Program offers a rotating list of courses each semester, including Gender and Justice, The Psychology of Human Sexuality, African-American Women in Art, Men: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, The Law and Politics of Sexual Orientation, Women and Crime, and many other small, discussion-based, exciting classes. Our program develops versatile thinkers with strong skills in critical problem solving, research, data collection, and writing. Gender Studies graduates go on to a wide variety of careers including the arts, business, education, health care, media, politics, law, public policy and social work.
